Carladez is a beautiful and historic little-known region, at 800 metres of altitude.
Once belonging to the principality of Monaco.
It is located above the Truyère Gorges, surrounded by the Cantal mounts and the high plateau of Aubrac

Presentation

Le Château de ValonThe point of the Rouergue region is volcanic.

The district of Mur-de-Barrez has belonged to Aveyron in the Midi-Pyrénées since 1790, with the formation of the departments. But it has still preserved its Auvergne features.

Carladez received its name because for a long time it belonged to the lords of Carlat, a fortress perched on a mesa (a basalt plateau with vertical sides) with a character out of the ordinary.

The Rocher de Carlat and its village are 20 minutes by car from Mur-de-Barrez, in the Cantal.

Visitors who now come to Mur-de-Barrez are astonished to find the name “Monaco” on the principal square and “Grimaldi” on the tower in the centre of the village, the ancient gate of the medieval town. These two names testify to a long history linking the Principality of Monaco to our region.

Honoré II reigned over the Principality from 1604. He signed the treaty of Péronne with Louis XIII King of France on September 14, 1641.

The Spaniards were driven out by this French alliance.

By way of payment, the Prince of Monaco received land in France :
- The duchy of Valentinois
- The viscounty of Carlat
- The marquisate of Baux with the estate of St Rémy de Provence

“People from Carladez have the honour of being part of both Rouergue and Auvergne”.
Gandillon Gens d’Armes

This characteristic is also found in the architecture of the traditional houses, whose originality lies mainly in its roofs, the variety of chimneys and the skylights.

Aveyron Carladez contains six towns : Brommat, Lacroix-Barrez, Mur-de-Barrez, Murols, Taussac and Thérondels.

Recharge your batteries…

poppyEarly this morning, you got up decided to enjoy this little part of Carladez.

And, at the moment when the sun has risen sending its warm rays between the trees onto the dewdrops, you found itself on the discovery walk of Brommat.

You close your eyes and listen to the river singing in your ears.

Your steps lead you to clearing.
Sit on the wood bench, let yourself go with nature, let it envelope you.

Breathe in the peace and quiet, far from worry.
You hear the song of the birds as if for the very first time; you feel the breath of fresh air gently brush your neck; you feel really alive in Carladez.

Maybe, you brought a book. How good it feels to read it.

If you like walking, it is time to continue in search of what nature has to offer :

  • dragonflies,
  • ladybirds,
  • trees,
  • colours,
  • ants,
  • fish,
  • sensations…

The river and this little corner of the countryside is a wonderland to be explored that you will never want to leave.

If you feel slightly peckish, and you fortunately thought about bringing along a piece of golden bread made by Alain or Serge, the village bakers, and a nice slice of sausage or Cantal cheese, your taste buds will thank you.

All these delights, if you know how to enjoy and appreciate them, are so many fine facets of Carladez.
