in Aveyron - Midi Pyrénées region Carladez is a beautiful and historic little-known region, at 800 metres of altitude.
Once belonging to the principality of Monaco.
It is located above the Truyère Gorges, surrounded by the Cantal mounts and the high plateau of Aubrac
The point of the Rouergue region is volcanic.
The district of Mur-de-Barrez has belonged to Aveyron in the Midi-Pyrénées since 1790, with the formation of the departments. But it has still preserved its Auvergne features.
Carladez received its name because for a long time it belonged to the lords of Carlat, a fortress perched on a mesa (a basalt plateau with vertical sides) with a character out of the ordinary.
The Rocher de Carlat and its village are 20 minutes by car from Mur-de-Barrez, in the Cantal.
Visitors who now come to Mur-de-Barrez are astonished to find the name "Monaco" on the principal square and "Grimaldi" on the tower in the centre of the village, the ancient gate of the medieval town. These two names testify to a long history linking the Principality of Monaco to our region.
Honoré II reigned over the Principality from 1604. He signed the treaty of Péronne with Louis XIII King of France on September 14, 1641.
The Spaniards were driven out by this French alliance.
By way of payment, the Prince of Monaco received land in France:
"People from Carladez have the honour of being part of both Rouergue and Auvergne".
- Gandillon Gens d'Armes -
This characteristic is also found in the architecture of the traditional houses, whose originality lies mainly in its roofs, the variety of chimneys and the skylights.
Aveyron Carladez contains six towns: Brommat, Lacroix-Barrez, Mur-de-Barrez, Murols, Taussac and Thérondels. Carladez, between Rouergue and Auvergne.
